Defective Takata air bags in 34 million vehicles lead to biggest recall in history

Under heavy pressure from U.S. regulators, automakers and rival suppliers, Takata is racing to increase output of replacement inflators for automakers that have recalled nearly 25 million vehicles.

Plans to double production to 900,000 units a month by September include the ramp-up of two new assembly lines at a plant in Monclova, Mexico, which will allow monthly production of replacement inflators to increase to 450,000 units, up from 300,000 units. According to Takata, they are expanding again, without identifying which factories will be participating in the production of the replacement inflators.

As Takata struggles to meet demands, rivals such as Autolive Inc., the world’s top airbag producer, acknowledged last month that that they are currently under contract to deliver up to 25 million inflators, and is in discussions with automakers to deliver millions more.
