
Study Warns of Diet Supplement Dangers Kept Quiet by F.D.A.
In hundreds of vitamin shops across the nation, popular weight-loss and workout supplements containing a chemical nearly identical to amphetamine are being sold. The powerful stimulant poses dangers to the health of those who take them, according to a new study. In December, the Canadian health authorities found the chemical, BMPEA, “a serious health risk,” and removed the supplements from store shelves. Despite documenting two years ago that nine such supplements contained the same chemical, The Food and Drug Administration has neither made public the names of the products and the companies that made them, nor has it recalled the products or issued a health alert to consumers as it has done with other tainted supplements.
